It was activated on November 1, 1942, at Camp Hood, Texas, under the command of Major General Troy Middleton. The division was initially formed as a training unit but saw combat in Europe, particularly in the Rhineland and Central Elbe campaigns. Its armored forces played significant roles in operations such as the Battle of the Bulge and the Siegfried Line campaign. The 12th Armored Division underwent several reorganizations during these periods, transitioning from an armored division to a light infantry division and eventually back to an armored division by the late 1970s. The division was again inactivated on July 15, 1984, at Fort Hood, Texas.Throughout its history, the 12th Armored Division has earned numerous campaign streamers and unit awards, reflecting the bravery, skill, and sacrifice of its soldiers during their service. The division's motto, "Semper Superior" (Always Superior), encapsulates the pride and commitment exhibited by its members.
